Placement Test

Spanish Language Placement Test

The purpose of the test is to place students in the appropriate language courses.

Students can take the Department's Spanish Placement Test on Canvas from Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 8:00am (EST) until Friday, July 30, 2021 at 2:00pm (EST). The make-up session will be August 16th at 8 am through August 18th at 2 pm EST.

Please note that the results of the test are only valid for one academic year. Furthermore, the only course accessible via the placement test that will be offered in the spring is SPA 108. All other courses (SPA 101, SPA 103, and SPA 105) will be available only in the fall.

Students who scored a 5 on the Spanish Language AP test, or 760 or higher on the Spanish Language SAT II test and took either test in 2020 or in 2021, must take the Spanish Placement Test to verify advanced placement. A score of 7 on the higher-level IB test or a grade of A on the British A-level exam also fulfills the requirement. We encourage students with advanced placement to consider taking a Spanish course at the 200 level or above . These students also qualify to take Portuguese 106.

Students who did not take an AP or SAT II test, or earned scores below 5 on the AP or below 760 on the SAT II, should take the online Placement Test. Based on the results, students will be placed only in SPA 101, 103, 105 or 108.

Students whose performance on the online Placement Test indicates that they are proficient in Spanish and may be eligible to place out of the foreign language requirement, have to take a second, brief exam, to verify that they have satisfied the foreign language requirement. Please contact Catalina Méndez Vallejo.
