• Angel G. Loureiro, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese, Emeritus, publishes first novel

    This spring, Emeritus professor Angel Loureiro published his first novel, titled “El mundo ciego.” The story follows two women, Marta and Alicia, who meet in Madrid and decide to spend a weekend hiking in the mountains in northern Spain.

    Marta, a translator, was suddenly left by her husband a few months earlier. Alicia, a few years younger than Marta, is a former drug addict who never finished her studies in philosophy and works as an assistant for the lawyer who is helping Marta with her divorce.

    Yasmina has successfully defended her dissertation “El Estrecho de Gibraltar y los Imaginarios del Cannabis: Culturas y Contraculturas Rifeño-Hispano-Magrebies (1859-1995).”

    Yasmina will be a Visiting Assistant Professor at Tulane University's Spanish and Portuguese Department.

  • Paloma Moscardó-Vallés honored at “Celebrating PACH” event

    On May 19, 2019, SPO Lecturer Paloma Moscardó-Vallés was honored at the 7th annual “Celebrating PACH (Partners for Andean Community Health)” fundraising event for her work in designing and leading SPA 204: Medical Mission to Ecuador. Paloma also gave a brief presentation which detailed the work that she and her students have done in Ecuador.

  • Silvana Bishop leads Spanish-language tour of exposition, “Miracles on the Border: Retablos of Mexican Migrants to the United States”

    On Saturday, May 25th Silvana Bishop, Graduate/Conference Administrator from the Spanish & Portuguese Department, led the first ever Spanish-language tour of the Princeton Art Museum. The occasion was for the exposition “Miracles on the Border: Retablos of Mexican Migrants to the United States” (on display until July 7th) and the tour group was “Futuro”, a Trenton program which encourages Hispanic teens to explore their heritage while preparing for college.

    Thomas Matusiak has successfully defended his dissertation, “The Visual Guillotine: Latin America and the Cinema of Cruelty .” Following graduation, Thomas will be a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Leslie Center for the Humanities and Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Dartmouth College.
