Bio/Description

Profile

Yvonne Gavela-Ramos, (Ph.D., Penn State University) joined Princeton University in 2022.

Her research centers on Iberian Studies specializing in Spanish films, literatures, and cultures. In her publications she analyzes film adaptations and collective remembering in Spanish fiction and films.

Her book monograph, El espejo de Perseo: Cultura visual en la narrativa y el cine español studies 1990s Spanish fiction through film and media culture. She proposes visual culture as an essential mediating tool to interpret and construct fictional worlds in contemporary Spain. From a postmodern stance, visual culture becomes a leading mythological trope as this era’s Perseus’s mirroring shield, capable of saving readers and spectators from the terror of the possible. These image-mediated urban stories capture a key moment in the development of the narrative self in Spain’s globalized society.

Her academic work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Studies in Hispanic Cinemas, Crítica Hispánica, and Hesperia, among others.

Her academic research also explores Digital Storytelling, multiliteracies, and creative writing in the Spanish 2L classroom, Spanish for Specific Purposes (Medical Spanish), and teacher education. Her most recent publications appear in The Routledge Handbooks in Multiliteracidades, multimodalidad e interdisciplinariedad en la enseñanza del español, Spanish for Specific Purposes, and Teoría Sociocultural y Español LE/L2.

Before joining Princeton University, she taught in ILCE (Instituto de Lengua y Cultura Españolas)-Universidad de Navarra. She was Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at University of Miami and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at University of Massachusetts Amherst and at Mount Holyoke College. She has been invited to teach graduate seminars for the Pennsylvania State University and for Instituto Cervantes.
