Charlie D. Hankin studies Latin American and Caribbean literature, culture, and music. His dissertation focusses on hip-hop from Cuba, Brazil, and Haiti. He has also written on cumbia and literature in Argentina and comparative receptions of the Haitian Revolution and the Brazilian Palmares quilombo. Charlie holds a MMus in Violin Performance and has performed and recorded early baroque, romantic, and hip-hop. His recent CD Sentimientos Desafinados, a collaboration with several Cuban hip-hop producers and recording artists, was nominated in 2017 for a Cubadisco award for best hip-hop album.
