SPO lecturer, Yvonne Gavela-Ramos, co-authored a chapter on Español para las profesiones de la salud with Glenn Martínez & Pilar Ortega in Español para Fines Específicos (EFE) / The Routledge Handbook of Spanish for Specific Purposes (SSP). This volume brings together SSP scholars from across geographical regions to share perspectives on past, present and future currents in the field.

The chapter presents new perspectives on Medical Spanish (MS) education in second language contexts, focusing on public health, cultural humility, and current educational theory pertaining to best practices in clinical communication skills training. It outlines MS programs for specific purposes, addressing variabilities in register, dialect, health concepts, and cultural differences. The chapter also explores intercultural consciousness and interpersonal communication in simulated cases with standardized patients, and the creation of clinical cases. They conclude with recommendations for effective program development and implementation of MS courses.
