On Monday, May 22nd, 2023, SPO lecturer Nicholas J. Figueroa, founder and moderator of the Latinos Urbanos Book Club, alongside its members, returned to KIPP All Middle School to offer scholarships to two new students and their families. Figueroa and his book club first met and offered, to four winning students, scholarships this past November 2022. After various fundraisers and donations, raising a total of $2,000, the book club returned to offer more scholarships, alongside copies of novels, read by the book club, and bookmarks.

Figueroa states that “it was another exciting night as the community came together to celebrate the two new scholarship winners! As these scholarship opportunities go toward helping students of color from our NYC communities with financial hardships, amidst their academic goals, we could not have been more blessed and grateful for all of the involvement and support of our communities.”

As of this moment, Figueroa and his book club has been able to administer 6 scholarships and are looking forward to returning this upcoming fall when they will be able to offer to more deserving young men and women a Latinos Urbanos Scholarship.
