On November 14, we welcomed Prof. Mike Mena in our SPA 307 class (Ways of Reading and Writing in Spanish).
Prof. Mena is a Mexican-American linguistic anthropologist and an Assistant Professor at Brooklyn College, CUNY. Prof. Mena's work focuses on the ideological perceptions of race and language in the context of American education. He is also the founder of "The Social Life of Language", a popular YouTube channel which currently houses over a hundred video lectures that focus on theoretical approaches to race and/or language in the United States.
In his in-person class visit, Prof. Mena discussed his latest article “The language elsewhere: a friendlier linguistic terrorism”. Students had the opportunity to make comments and ask him questions about language ideologies, standardization, and language policies in the United States.
