This semester, all sections of SPA209 welcomed two award-winning filmmakers, Spanish-Uruguayan director Álvaro Brechner and Argentinian director Benjamín Ávila, to talk about their films Mr Kaplan (2014) and Infancia clandestina (2011). Both filmmakers generously shared the inspiration behind their films and went over the technical strategies in selected scenes. They also described the difficult choices they had to make during the film editing process, and how their perspective about their film keeps evolving over time. These illuminating conversations with both directors gave students and instructors an unparalleled opportunity to gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding of their films.
