On Wednesday, March 20th, Medical Spanish students led by lecturer Paloma Moscardó, collaborated with the Princeton chapter of the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program or KDSAP. This initiative involves conducting educational training workshops that empower students to organize health screenings for the community.
KDSAP organized a clinic at the United Methodist Church on Nassau Street during the Cornerstone Community Kitchen event where free meals were being served by volunteers to the local community with the intent of reducing hunger for another day.
To prepare, the students worked in class learning about chronic kidney disease and making flyers about relevant issues. Then, at the event, they talked to the participants at the end of the screening process. Due to the high volume of participants, some of the students were also helping the Spanish speakers going through different stations of the clinic.
The event was not only very successful in terms of participants; it was a great opportunity for the medical students to be in contact with the Latino community and to learn about some of the real issues they face. It was also a great opportunity to practice their language skills while learning, practicing empathy, and sharing with the participants.
