On Thursday, March 28, 2024, Prof. Estilita Cassiani Obeso from Northwestern University visited the SPA-LIN 211 class (Varieties of Spanish). During her visit, Prof. Cassiani Obeso talked to students about the social, historical, and cultural context of Palenquero, one of the four remaining Spanish-based creole languages still spoken today in San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia. During her presentation and the Q&A session, Prof. Cassiani Obeso described linguistic features of Palenquero and explained current initiatives for the reclamation and instruction of the language.
