In February 2025, an academic article written by SPO lecturer Flor Chiaramonte was published by Revista de Estudios Hispánicos. The article, titled “Las tretas del débil en las cartas ranqueles: estrategias discursivas para combatir el extrañamiento”, is part of the dossier “Exilio, destierro y otras formas de extrañamiento en el siglo diecinueve hispanoamericano (1850–1910)”, edited by Carolina Alzate and Juan Carlos González Espitía. Flor’s research focused on auto-representations of indigenous people in 19th century Argentina and is part of a broader investigation of the few documents known in the region from this perspective. As stated by the editors: In “Las tretas del debil", María Florencia Chiaramonte explores the correspondence of Ranqueles leaders with Christian missionaries who acted as representatives of state authority. Chiaramonte demonstrates how the indigenous leaders use language, writing, discourse, and rhetoric to navigate their problematic situation in the limbo between belonging and exclusion from the Argentine national project in the 1870s. In the face of the religious mission and the military fort that signaled the loss of their territories and the destruction of their way of life, the indigenous chiefs negotiate affectively to present their people as part of the ideological project that ultimately views them as obstacles to the idea of citizenship and progress”.
