On January 6, 2024, SPO Lecturer César A. Romero Fernández organized and chaired a panel at MLA 2024, Philadelphia, entitled "Beyond Patriarchy and Heteronormativity: Andean Masculinities in Contemporary Literature." The panel explored how contemporary Latin American literature addresses the complexities of gender construction with a focus on masculinities. The panel included Carlos Rubens López Pari, (U of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), Manuela Borzone (Nebraska Wesleyan U), Jonatan Guerra (U of Colorado, Boulder), and Natalia Chavez (Georgetown U). Their presentations illuminated the spaces of negotiation and contestation of hegemonic images of masculinity, which literature reveals as new possibilities for building an equal society.
