In June 2017, Firestone Library received an important gift of eight first editions of works by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz donated by Mr. Edgar Legaspi of New York City.

Known internationally as “The Tenth Muse” because of her brilliant writing, Sor Juana was a self-taught author and philosopher whose texts comprised mystery plays, poetry and Baroque ceremonial pieces, as well as the first feminist manifesto written in the New World.

In a special event marking this key acquisition of Sor Juana’s rare books, Professor Nicole Legnani touched upon the importance and legacy of Sor Juana’s work, as well as took the opportunity to mention that she will be teaching an undergraduate seminar focusing on the most important works of Sor Juana in the spring of 2018.

These first editions which Mr. Legaspi has generously given to Princeton will be available to readers worldwide who can now consult all of them at Princeton and has made the distinguished Latin American collection at Firestone Library an even more illustrious archive.
