Dina Ananco, Wampis and Awajun poet from the Peruvian Amazon, visited SPA 359, The Cultural Production of Amazonia, taught by Professor Catalina Arango-Correa. Dina talked with students about her book Sanchiu (2021), her relationship with her mother tongues and cultures, her translation process
from Wampis into Spanish, her multiple identities as a Wampis and Awajun woman living in Lima, gender relations in the Wampis and Awajun communities, the never-ending struggle of the Wampis and Awajun people against extractivism in their ancestral territories, and indigenous sustainable alternatives to development. It was a vibrant and moving conversation, and it was an honor for the class to have her!
Thank you, Dina Ananco!
