On Friday, September 22 the Boquitas Pintadas Film Club inaugurated their Fall 2023 semester of programming with Rodrigo Sorogoyen's The Beasts (As bestas). SPO grad students Catarina Oliviera and Tatiane Rangel introduced the Boquitas and their mission for those who were joining them for the first time, in addition to expressing their gratitude to the Spanish and Portuguese department for making their film club possible. Pablo Guarin and Renee Congdon then presented a short text about the film, discussing, for example, the film's rural setting in Galicia and Galicia's history of emigration. With thirty audience members in attendance, the event was a great success, and attendees were eager to discuss the film over dinner and drinks afterwards. Many debated the film's ambiguous and inconclusive final scene, while others discussed the nature of its portrayal of violence, and yet others pondered over the potential for an allegorical reading of the film.
