  • SPO Concentrator Kyle Berlin Named Valedictorian of Princeton’s Class of 2018.

    Kyle Berlin, a Spanish and Portuguese languages and cultures major from Arroyo Grande, California, has been selected as valedictorian of Princeton’s Class of 2018. He will deliver the valedictory address at Princeton’s Commencement ceremony on Tuesday, June 5.

    Berlin graduated from Arroyo Grande High School. He participated in Princeton’s Bridge Year Program in Peru before starting his academic program at the University.

    Along with his concentration in Spanish and Portuguese, he is pursuing certificates in Latin American studies, creative writing and theater.

  • The Princeton Center for Language Study Announces New Language Teaching Credential for Graduate Students

    The Princeton Center for Language Study (PCLS) will be offering a new Language Teaching Credential beginning September 2018 for graduate students in French & Italian, German, Slavic Languages & Literatures, and Spanish & Portuguese.

  • Audio: POR 304 “Sound and Sense” Students Create Podcast Episodes

    As final projects for POR 304 “Sound and Sense,” students created podcast episodes. Topics range from popular music to linguistics, identity, work, dance, singing, water, and others. Narrations and interviews were recorded in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French. The McGraw Digital Learning Lab—in particular, Dan Claro—assisted with the technical aspect of mixing and editing the audio.

  • Graduate School Awards Ingrid Brioso Rieumont with 2018 Teaching Award

    SPO graduate student, Ingrid Brioso Rieumont, was recently awarded a 2018 Teaching Award by the Graduate School in recognition of her work as an assistant in instruction. The Teaching Awards honors graduate students who have made a significant contribution to undergraduate teaching. Ingrid was nominated through letters of support by her undergraduate students and by members of the faculty who felt her dedication to teaching was especially outstanding and deserving of recognition.

  • Princetonians at the Spanish Theater

    Last December students from SPA103 Intensive Beginners and Intermediate Spanish went to Repertorio Español, a performing arts theater in Manhattan. Together we attended the play Valor, agravio y mujer, a comedia from the Spanish Golden Age, authored by Ana Caro Mallén de Soto and directed by Cuban dramatist Leyma López. The play featured performers from Cuba, Spain and Puerto Rico.

  • Languages come alive: Intersession in Spain and Portugal

    This intersession, Princeton juniors concentrating in Spanish and Portuguese took a week-long trip to Spain and Portugal. A capstone to the junior seminar “Spanish and Portuguese-Speaking Worlds,” the trip is designed to give students a hands-on opportunity to explore the history, language and culture they will continue studying in the classroom. The trip took place between the end of the fall semester and the start of the spring semester.

  • SPO Students Visit Princeton Nursery School

    Last month, a group of students enrolled in SPA 107 visited Princeton Nursery School (PNS) to participate in a Spanish storytelling event in collaboration with the Community-Based Learning Initiative (CBLI).

    The theme of the event was animals and colors and students enjoyed reading together with PNS students. As part of the visit, the students also brought books that were offered by the department to be donated to the school.

    Following the visit, students had the opportunity to write about their experience in their final composition.
