William Rowe, Emeritus Professor of Poetics, Birkbeck College University of London, will give two workshops on reading Latin-American poets. Rowe is a poet, translator and scholar. The second workshop is on Friday, April 9 at 1:00PM.
What does a poem do? What is its action, in the life inside us and equally outside? What alterations of space and time do particular poems bring about?
Starting from César Vallejo, we will follow the different pathways his poems open up as they transform the inheritance he received, namely Modernismo and Avant-Gardism. One path will lead us in the direction of the unmoored image which proliferates at the edge of a void, in the work of Lezama Lima and Néstor Perlongher. The other, equally concerned with force and form, with the body, space and language, passes through Blanca Varela, Raúl Zurita and Mario Montalbetti. This second direction splits apart the world of the senses, and opens us to the force of what’s not in language.
We will also read poems in English that resonate with these poets’ work and extend our apprehension of how it radiates.
